About this place

Caen has a great number of historical monuments, but the largest of them all is probably the castle of William the Conqueror. A walk on the covered way offers a splendid view of the town. There are two abbeys in Caen - the Men's Abbey and its church of Saint Stephen, which is now the town hall, and the Women's Abbey and its church of the Trinity. You can discover a traditional 16th century house by visiting the Maison des Quatrans in the historical centre of Caen. The horse races of Caen are very reputed. It is also the town in which the first trotting races were organised in the 1830s.

Tourist Information

NORMANDY - GASTRONOMY - HISTORY - SEA

In short

  • Caen is sometimes called "the 100 bells' town; indeed, it can brag about possessing several churches and other kinds of monuments, in spite of all the bombings the town suffered during WW2. Some of its buildings date back from the period of the 11th century and of William the Conqueror, whose name Caen never forgets to glorify: c’est le cas de l’Abbaye aux Dames, de l’Abbaye aux Hommes, ou de du Château de Guillaume le Conquérant.
  • You should also visit Caen because of its gastronomy: the food of Normandy is delicious and the town is renowned for its famous Caen tripes.
  • Lastly, the city enjoys a lively cultural activity all year long: in February, you'll have the opportunity to attend the BMX international competition; in April and May, you'll discover Interstices, a festival dedicated to sound and visual arts through unclassifiable meetings; all summer long, on Thursdays and Fridays, street arts are in the spotlight; and in September, the Normandy Channel race is a 1000 miles long naval race through the English Channel, which starts and ends in Caen; and Caen's International Fair ("Foire Internationale de Caen") unfolds during the very same month.

Climate

Caen has an oceanic climate, with cool summers and mild winters. The average temperatures are 4.5°C in January and 17°C in July. Winter is the rainiest season, so you'd better avoid it!
