SOUTH - GASTRONOMY - WINES - MONUMENTS

In short

Bordeaux is famous in the whole wild world for one particular thing: its wines! The wines of Bordeaux are very appreciated and glorified in the newly opened Cité du Vin (the "City of Wine"), which happens to be an architectural marvel beyond compare. This museum opens a true initiatory journey at the heart of the wine culture.

Bordeaux is very beautiful town: don't forget to go and admire its numerous and gorgeous monuments, like the Rohan Palace (it is the town hall, which was built during the 18th century), the Grosse Cloche (the "Big Bell", the town's oldest belfry, which also dates back from the 18th century), or go to the Museum of Aquitaine to learn more about the history of the region, which almost became English.

The Place de la Bourse (the "Bourse square") and its Miroir d’Eau (literally, the "water glass") are the city's most famous places: indeed, this is the place that is associated to Bordeaux the most. Let's go through this square during your holidays!

Climate

Bordeaux has an oceanic weather, with very mild winters and very hot summers. Average temperatures are 6.6°C in January and 21.4°C in July. The amount of sunny days in the city is particularly high. Try to come visit Bordeaux before or after the heights of summer, in June or during autumn, when it is still hot enough to bathe in the sea, and when the tourists are back home.

Our best tips

  • Taste the wine, the cuisine of Bordeaux and of Gascony; they are succulent!
  • Go and visit Arcachon Bay and its Île aux Oiseaux (French for "Birds Island"): these two destinations are close to Bordeaux and they're both worth the ride!

Average prices for hotels

  • Low budget: 73€ per night in high season and 66€ in low season.
  • Mid-range: 88€ per night in high season and 83€ in low season.
  • Luxury: 276€ per night in high season and 259€ in low season.

Recommended areas for your hotel

  • The neighbourhood of Saint-Jean railway station, on the Garonne river banks, is really useful for travelers who like to move.
  • The "Hotel de Ville" (Town Hall) area is the center of the city: from there, you can do and visit (almost) everything by foot.
