About this place

Saint-Malo is named the pirate city. The malouinières, former holiday homes of shipowners, bear testament to the history of the city. At low tide, you can reach the Fort National and the Fort de Petit Be, two of the former bastions protecting Saint-Malo. At high tide, you must go to the Tour des Remparts to admire the superb sight of the waves breaking against the walls of Saint-Malo. In the old chateau, discover the History Museum of the Town of Saint-Malo and its wax gallery of the famous sons and daughters of the town. But Saint-Malo is not only a historical city - it is also a seaside resort with beaches, hotels and casinos.

Tourist Information

SEA - BRITTANY

In short

  • Saint Malo is the most important harbour in Britanny: its history dates back to the Gauls.
  • There, you might want to visit the Fort national, accessible only at low tide, or go to the town walls dominating the sea. The ramparts surround the town from one side to the other; it is a rare feature. The military function of the city is still important nowadays: you can visit the seashore bastions, which are still open to visitors.
  • Saint-Malo boasts about having welcomed renowned sailor Robert Surcouf for several years; indeed, the town is rich in traces of his passage.
  • Saint-Malo's aquarium is quite impressive.
  • All year long, Saint-Malo organizes numerous cultural events like the comic books festival Quai des Bulles in autumn, or the literature festival Etonnants Voyageurs (literally, "Marvellous Travelers", or "Surprising Travelers") during spring. Last but not least, Folklores du Monde festival ("World's Folklores") takes place during summer.

Climate

The climate is both oceanic and temperate, with very mild temperature during the whole year. Average temperatures are 7.8°C in January, and 18.6°C in July.

Our best tips

  • Start by walking along the ramparts, to enjoy the view over the sea and to avoid the flocks of tourists (if you come early enough, of course).
  • Saint-Malo is a main city in Brittany history, ever since French naval history's great expeditions and journeys; you'll discover the whole thing inside Solidor tower and in the International Cape Horner Voyage Museum (in French, its full name is: "Musée International du Long Cours Cap-Hornier").

Average prices for hotels

  • Low budget: 62€ per night in low season, and 84€ in high season.
  • Mid-range: 77€ per night in low season, and 100€ in high season.
  • Luxury: 91€ per night in low season, and 126€ in high season.

Recommended areas for your hotel

  • The centre of town is located close to the Museum of Maritime History; this is the quaintest spot in town!
  • The hotels situated along the seafront all comprise a view over the sea: indeed, they are mostly attended, and rightly so! They are ideal for a dream holiday in Saint-Malo!
