As the emblematic symbol at the heart of Annecy, Lake Annecy offers a sumptuous setting of dazzling colors at altitudes of up to 447 meters.

Several beaches border the lake offering a relaxing moment in the sun. Pleasant lakeside paths have also been laid out for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Thiou River and the Canals of the Old Town

The Thiou River surrounds the old town, creating a landscape similar to Venice.

The small river collects the pure, natural waters of Lake Annecy via two canals: Le Port and Le Canal du Vassé. The canals run through Annecy’s old town, justifying its name as the “Venice of the Alps”.

  • Le Port borders the Jardins de l’Europe and hosts the moorings for boats that offer tourists the chance to cruise the lake. Today, no nautical activities are offered on the canals.
  • The Canal du Vassé flows under the famous Pont des Amours and was dug to infill the ramparts.

There’s a superb promenade on the Quais de l’Île and Quais de l’Évêché that runs alongside the river. Here, the cobbled streets of the old town and houses with colorful facades set a charming scene.

The Picturesque Bridges

Numerous bridges cross the Thiou, offering ideal views of the canal. Perfect for photos!

The Pont de la Perrière is the best vantage point for snapping an unmissable shot of the Palais de l’Île splitting the Thiou in two. Listed as a historic monument in 1900, the palace is now one of Annecy’s landmarks.

The Pont des Amours crosses the Canal du Vassé, offering splendid views and a romantic setting at any time of day, no matter the season. On one side, there’s a 180-degree view of the lake and the Ile aux Cygnes; on the other, the canal and harbor. Just magnificent!

A Dive into History

Founded in the Middle Ages, Annecy owes its charm to its picturesque canals and well-preserved architecture.

As a fortified city, it became an economic and cultural hub. Despite the ravages of war and fire, its cultural heritage remains intact.

Today, Annecy is a popular tourist destination for its landscapes and outdoor activities, while remaining true to its historic roots.
