The city of Clermont-Ferrand is built on the side of a volcano of the Puy de Dome range. Clermont-Ferrand stands apart due to the colour of its buildings, made of black volcanic stone called the Volvic stone. The Basilica of Our Lady of the Port is on the road to Santiago de Compostela. It contains the famous Gilded Virgin. The Place de Jaude is the liveliest place in the city of Clermont-Ferrand, with its restaurants, cafes, Opera house and shopping centres.
