Albi is called the red city due to the colour of the bricks of its cathedral and the old town. The cathedral of Saint Cecile of Albi is one of the largest brick monuments in the world. It towers 78 metres above the Tarn. The town centre of Albi is not large, but is a museum in itself with its picturesque streets dating from the Middle Ages. The Toulouse-Lautrec museum contains a very fine collection of the works of that famous painter. The Palais de la Berbie is the former residence of the Bishops of the south of France, where you can walk in the superb terraced gardens.
