The name of Belleville first appeared in the fifteenth century and the village experienced a period of prosperity until the French Wars of Religion (1562-98).
After a period of growth, cabarets and music halls became increasingly popular Belleville in the eighteenth century. Belleville then experienced a particularly turbulent revolutionary period.
In the 20th century, Belleville was a common first destination for new economic migrants.
The close knit community in Belleville ensured a rapid integration into the world of Belleville for these new arrivals.
