At the turn of the century, artists and intellectuals abandoned Montmartre for the Left Bank, taking root in Montparnasse. It was the heyday of the school of Paris and its classrooms were the local cafés.
Today, it is stil the home of these cafés and restaurants, shops, theaters and cinemas. The quarter is dominated by the Montparnasse Tower, Paris' first skyscraper (209m/688 ft) which offers a super view of the city on the 56th floor.
At the tower base is a shopping center featuring famous stores like
Galeries Lafayette.
