Tourist Information
The Ile St Louis ("Isle of St Louis"), originally known as the Notre Dame (or "Our Lady") Island, was split in two by a canal around 1360. Development of the city on the island was conceived in the reign of Henri IV, but only realized under Louis XIII. Its inhabitants are known as "Ludovicians".
Today, the village atmosphere of the Ile St Louis, with its small shops and its inimitable charm, makes it one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Paris. Tourists from all over the world and Parisians alike love to stroll past the stores selling artworks and curios all along its long main street. Don't miss out on enjoying an ice cream at Bertillon, one of Paris's finest ice cream makers, or on discovering the architecture of old Paris along the Seine. The variety of restaurants of all styles is unique to the Ile St Louis: from crêperies to tavernas to fine dining establishments such as the famous Tour d'Argent ("the Silver Tower").
