Tourist Information
It was Charlemagne who had the idea, in the 860s, of centralising the country's monetary power in a single establishment. Since that time, only the state may produce money. It was the Monnaie de Paris that had the task of minting the French national coinage. Its activities did not stop there, the Monnaie de Paris also fought against counterfeiting, but it also created jewellery and artistic castings. All this history is recounted at the Museum of the Monnaie de Paris, which opened in 1988. Through an outstanding collection consisting of historic machines, engravings and 2,000 coins and 450 medals, discover the history of the mint. The Museum of the Monnaie de Paris organises not only exhibitions, but also private sales as well as sales for collectors of coins and medals. http://www.monnaiedeparis.fr/
