Tourist Information
The great 19th-century painter Gustave Moreau was also a teacher of Fine Arts in Paris and taught painting to Matisse. In 1898, he decided to leave his house - which was also his workshop - to the State. He carefully organised the place, finding the perfect place for each of his works and objects and asked that order to be followed so that the museum would be true to his image. On 13 January 1903, the Gustave Moreau museum was inaugurated. As you walk through this house full of history, you can see the many books and unusual objects belonging to the artist. But it mainly contains the largest collection of works of Gustave Moreau. His paintings show the stages in his artistic career and enable visitors to get a better understanding of his work. In the Gustave Moreau museum, you can go back in time to the life and memories of the artist. To experience that pleasure, go to 14 rue de La Rochefoucault, in the 9th district of Paris.
