Tourist Information On the occasion of the 1931 Universal Exposition, the city of Paris set up a small temporary zoo in the Bois de Vincennes so that Parisians could discover exotic animals. In view of the Parc's great success, it became a permanent feature and, after some conversion work, the Zoo de Vincennes was inaugurated in 1934. The Paris zoo covers an area of 14.5 hectares and is today one of the most famous zoos in France. What makes this animal park special is the proximity with the animals - there are no fences any more and the animals are separated from the visitors only by ditches. The Zoo de Vincennes is home to over 1,200 animals, some of which are very rare or endangered species. You will also be able to admire pandas or white rhinoceros. Not to mention antelopes, big cats, elephants and bears. On the 65-metre high Great Rock that dominates the park, mouflons, vultures and the otters have taken up residence. From the top of this "mountain", you will have a superb panoramic view over the whole park and a part of the capital.
